Nature presents sceneries that captivate the eyes and provides an opportunity for more profound reflection on creation and the masterful ingenuity behind it. Such reflections often lead to a more precise understanding and appreciation of our place, role, and function in the universe. Therefore, to provide the opportunity for such profound reflections, the Adventist English group of Canton Vaud spent the Sabbath in nature on the August 15th 2020 in Château d’Oex.

We started with a worship, where our hosts family McCarthy led us in adoration. Brendan played the guitar and the rest of us joyfully sang uplifting gospel songs. We also had a very enriching program for children, that involved two stories and a stone coloring activity that pointed to Jesus as the cornerstone of our salvation. Then, pastor Samuel delivered a strong spiritual message about the urgency of mission in our time. After the worship, we gathered around barbecue and had lunch together. The Sabbath ended with two hike options, an easy one and an intermediate one. Our programs are always designed to take into account different needs and interests of people, and the hike was no exception.

In total, we had around 30 people of all ages participating in the Sabbath activities. Covid-19 prevented us from worshipping indoor, but it was a real blessing to worship together with such a large congregation, which maybe would never happen in normal circumstances. There was not a single person who knew everyone else, so it was a great occasion to get to know new people and build friendships that will last. Glory be to God.

Our Snow Weekend Conference at Les Diablerets, which took place on January 18-20th 2019, marked a very important chapter in the history of the Adventist English Group-Vaud. The event coincided with the second year of our existence with a suitable theme “Living the Life of Fullness”. The goal of this gathering was to create a community atmosphere where we can pray, worship, get to know ourselves better and share a beautiful moment together. The event in Diablerets brought in total 54 people (Adventist and visitors) from the German and French-speaking part of Switzerland.

The gathering began on January 18 in Les Bosquets, where most of the activities of the weekend took place. The program comprised of various activities including a moment of worship, seminars, games, karaoke singing, leisure time, nature walk, skiing, sledging, and pizza party. Using a holistic approach, our activities were designed to meet the physical, intellectual, emotional and spiritual needs of attendants.

The Sabbath was particularly special, filled with different activities. For the worship part, we were blessed with the presence of several musicians from different backgrounds performing songs with different instruments and in different languages. The children were not left out, with a special storytelling for them during the worship time.

An interview with our guest speaker for the weekend helped us to discover his purpose and passion in life. Dr. Tihomir Lazic is a lecturer at Newbold College with specialization in contemporary ecclesiology. He also serves as the Director of Public Campus Ministry at the Trans-European Division of the Seventh-Day Adventist church. He designed three messages from the weekend Theme “Living the Life of Fullness”. Drawing inspiration from Acts 2:44-47, he called us to become engaged in the building of an authentic community, where the presence of God is visible through acts of love, care, and sharing. He declared that the secret to living a life of fullness is found in community living with the Spirit as the uniting force of the community.

After the worship and a good supper, we went for a walk in the mountains. The goal was to observe the beauty of creation and reflect upon the wonders of God. The fascinating scenes of the snow-covered ground, mountains, and trees were breathtaking — bringing praise and adoration from the lips of participants. The occasion also allowed us to share personal stories which helped us to get to know

each other on a deeper level, creating a bond of genuine friendship and community among us. This beautiful community spirit and friendship continued into the evening around a pizza dinner party followed by a spontaneous gathering for playing instruments, singing in many languages and playing various games. On Sunday, which marked the official end of our snow weekend, we went out into the snow to engage in various sporting activities such as sledging, snowboarding, and skiing.

Though we are coming from different backgrounds, countries, and speaking different languages, we were united. Many of us met there for the first time, but we sensed that we belong to each other, and felt part of the community. All without exception expressed their joy for participating in such a unique and holistic gathering and also shared their willingness to repeat this Spirit-filled and community-centered meeting. Here are some of the messages we received from attendees:
– Dear Friends! 😃 It was a pleasure to be part of this beautiful event! Spiritually and socially – it was “almost” this secret life of Fullness. Wish you God’s presence and His blessings… 😃
– We are grateful to God who brought us to this beautiful place to listen to amazing testimonies and introduced us to wonderful people. Special thanks to Aleksandar, Samuel and Shannon for the organization and implementation of this blessed project! May the Lord continue to lead you in your mission!
– It was the best weekend in Switzerland for me, thank you all very much!
– Great weekend! Thanks for the very balanced program and organisation.
– It was a beautiful and spirit-filled weekend. It’s my prayer that the organizers keep this up. Nice meeting new people and friends. Stay blessed everyone.
– Thank you for this beautiful event and everyone’s kindness, very good organizers and deep spiritual moments! I am looking forward to the upcoming events!
– We are also very thankful for the nice time together with all of you. We appreciate a lot the great workshops and music of Tihomir and enjoyed the good spirit in all the activities of the whole group. Thank you all and let’s keep in touch!
– Thank you Aleksandar, Sam 🙏 and thank you all! I had better two days😅 with good people😇 and that means a lot to me❤

And by God’s grace, we hope to meet again next year for another holistic gathering.

The mission of the Adventist English Group Vaud – Social Services is to serve the community in Christ’s name and to demonstrate the love of God.

On December 1 2018, the group gathered together at an EMS in Lausanne, to help get residents and staff members in the Christmas spirit and spread some joy. Music is one of the most uplifting things about Christmas and the group choir provided a live mini carol concert. Oh, the power of music! What a thrilling performance! The choir sang beautifully and it was wonderful to see the residents enjoying themselves and singing along well-loved Christmas carols in French, English and German.

In closing, a special prayer was made to give thanks to God and to ask for continuing peace, protection and love for the New Year.

September 8th 2018 marked a very important chapter in the history of the Adventist English Group-Vaud. We had the privilege to be among the Seventh-day Adventist churches in Europe to host the Australian international musician couple, Eric and Monique, on their Europe tour. The concert opened with a short interview of the couple to grasp the overall motivation behind their musical missionary activities. The concert combined song ministration and testimonies that were so edifying and life transforming. More than 50 people were in attendance including visitors. At the end of the concert, we had the opportunity to interact with the participants and visitors as we shared snacks and drinks around a common table. A good number of participants expressed their joy for listening to such inspirational and uplifting songs, and for sharing that wonderful moment with the community.

The first of August, which is a Swiss national day, saw a team of Adventist English Group-Vaud members reach out to the Lausanne community. The day was marked with the distribution of flyers inviting people for a musical concert, distribution of literature materials, sharing of fruits, free hugs and children lifting balloons with their own customized message of prayer. Even though at a point it started raining, that did not extinguish the spirit and passion of the team. We were determined to share that special occasion with the Lausanne community. The significance of the occasion and the outreach is how it reminded us of Pentecost, a Jewish national holiday and the great outreach that the apostles undertook on that special occasion. Even though the group did not receive such a great response as the day of Pentecost, it was considered a big step forward in sharing the love of Christ with the Lausanne community. The reaction of people who benefited from the outreach was pure satisfaction which brought great joy and warmth to the heart. The team was grateful to God for such an experience and encouraged to engage in such outreach activities in the future.

Two main reasons led the English-speaking group of the Adventist Church in Renens to organize once more a social event. On the one hand, it is our objective to establish contact with people from the region, no matter what their believes are, in order to set a base to eventually gain trust and shine into their lives with God’s light and love. On the other hand, we would like to create opportunities for believers to get better acquainted and to be more familiar with one another.

Within this context, about 25 people from different backgrounds and of different ages gathered on Sunday, the 24th of June to enjoy doing sport on a beautiful warm summer day. Most of them played beach volleyball at the beach volleyball pitches of Vidy in Lausanne next to the lake of Geneva. The teams were so much absorbed in the game that they only stopped to have lunch after a couple of hours. A few opted for a nice table tennis match just a couple of hundred metres from the volleyball heroes. And last, but not least, a pair of badminton rackets was deployed too.

Around 1 pm, the fire was lit on the grill and the sporty group could regain strength around a shared barbecue/picnic at the lakeside.

People had found out about the event in different ways: through the announcement at the Adventist Church in Renens, on glocals, through social media (for instance, Facebook event) and by personal invitations.

We spent a beautiful, blessed and active day. Thank you, Lord!

Nature presents sceneries that captivate the eyes and provides an opportunity for more profound reflection on creation and the masterful ingenuity behind it. Such reflections often lead to a more precise understanding and appreciation of our place, role, and function in the universe. Therefore, to provide the opportunity for such profound reflections, the Adventist English group of Canton Vaud organized an outing into nature on the June 2nd 2018 in the Vallée de L’Intyamon which is situated between Bulle and Château d’Oex.

The itinerary path we took is popularly known as the Lords of the Middle Ages, a path that allowed us the opportunity to discover several landscapes and different historic sites such as the historic bridge on the Lake of Montbovon. Discovering a variety of flowers, mountains and landscapes under the sun and the summer heat because of the southern orientation was the favorite part of many. The walk was children-friendly and took approximately 4 hours to complete. The walk afforded the opportunity to have a profound interaction between ourselves and the visitors who came onboard.

In total, we had 18 persons participating in the event. We were privileged to have a professional tour guide in the person of Denis Desvoignes, making the whole event to be one that was adventurous and a memorable one. Glory be to God.

This time we organized an event that is especially attractive for young people and families – a visit to Aqua Parc Le Bouveret. Aqua Parc is a closed and heated facility that accepts visitors during the entire year. There are shallows for small children, as well as water slides of different difficulty levels. The adventure is similar to sledging, except that we slide on water rather than on snow.

The event was scheduled on Sunday, 22nd April. We were happy to welcome for the event 13 people of different ages and backgrounds. Some people brought their friends, so this was also an opportunity to meet new people. People enjoyed the event. One visitor came straight from the Geneva airport, reluctant to miss such an opportunity! For many attendees, it was the first visit to the Aqua Parc, although they have lived in the area for many years. The reason is that the venue is not easily accessible by public transportation. To meet this need, we organized car transportation for everyone, at least to and from the closest big train station (Villeneuve).

This was an opportunity to know each one better, to enjoy water sliding together, and to meet new friends. Thank you Lord for giving us this opportunity!

Monumentally, one of the historical events that provide insight into Christian self-understanding within the framework of its eschatological hope and assurance of salvation find expression in the death and resurrection of Christ. The historical significance of this phenomenal event is underpinned by it becoming a chief determinant in the historical cycle of world history from BC to the AD. Therefore to commemorate this historical feat, we the Adventist English Group of Canton Vaud in collaboration with Ephphatha staged a concert dabbed Easter musical concert. The event opened with a brief historical overview of the Christian understanding of Christ resurrection and the central place it occupies within the overall aspirations and hope of Christians.

The sensational Ephphatha group followed with a musical rendition in various languages such as French, English, Portuguese and Lingala to the admiration of all who were present. Next to this was song ministration from our miniature children’s choir represented by Selina and Sara. Finally, a dramatic story involving twelve plastic eggs that contained symbols that traced the glorious story of Jesus resurrection and biblical stories explaining the significance of each of the symbols was staged.

The program was blessed with the presence of many visitors, and in all a total of 45 persons were present. The community and socializing dimension were not left out as we shared snacks around a common table at the end of the program. In the end, participants expressed their joy and satisfaction. Thus, we can emphatically say thank you to God.

During the 2018 Global Youth Day, different church groups in the Lausanne area did a social service for the community with the Adventist English Group-Vaud being no exception. That day saw the English group brazed through the rain to bring the love of Christ to the general public in the form of free hugs. We were placed at a location that was very strategic, close to a bus and metro station and not far from a McDonald’s restaurant at Chauderon. The gesture was to demonstrate the unconditional love of Christ to the Lausanne community. In a context where so many people are covered with the cold of loneliness, our free hugs gesture was like a beam of sun rays to dispel the cold of loneliness that characterizes the lives of many. Our colorful free hugs cards signs stood out in the middle of the greyness. Some passers-by were curious, others were suspicious, nonetheless nobody was showing signs of indifference. To the more adventurous who stopped by and received a hug, an Easter Musical Concert flyer was offered. At a point, we felt it was not enough to share free hugs but to have an encounter that will ensue into a real conversation about the Christian faith. Moreover, to us, we felt such an experience will be a testimony. In our quest to experience this testimony, we shared a prayer to encounter such persons, and to our utmost surprise, a man showed up a minutes after the prayer, and he showed genuine interest in discussions concerning the Christian faith.

Getting to the ending part of our Free Hugs event, we received a “come over to Macedonia’s” help, from our superstar little Sara whose presence served as a game changer in the whole hugging event. More and more people were, therefore, coming for free hugs as a result of her presence. Finally, our Free hugs event came to an end after a group of gentlemen numbering about 20, who were throwing a bachelor party for their friend, showed up and came for free hugs. The experience was great, seeing the joy and smile on people faces as we administered the love of Christ to the Lausanne community.
